What is Performing Arts?
GCSE Performing Arts helps students develop both new and existing skills in a range of performance disciplines.
This specification offers students the opportunity to specialise in one or more of the performing arts disciplines including; acting, singing, dance, music, music technology, DJ'ing, lighting, sound, set design, costume design, properties, masks, puppets, make-up, stage management, front of house, marketing and publicity.

The course:
- engages students in the processes of Performing Arts to develop as effective and independent learners
- develops broad skills, knowledge and understanding of the Performing Arts industry
- develops understanding of the contribution the industry makes at both local and national level
- develops personal attributes including self-confidence, resilience, perseverance, self-discipline and commitment
- provides a solid foundation for progression in Performing Arts, Theatre Studies and generic subjects including Dance, Drama and Music
- provides a foundation for design work in set, costume and props and technical elements as in lighting and sound
- introduces a wide range of personal and organisational skills for the work place.
What will you do on the course?
There are two units which will be studied:
Unit 1 - Skills Development
In this portfolio unit, candidates will provide evidence of their learning and development of appropriate skills used in presentations and performances. |
Unit 2 - Showcase Performance
This unit is based on the work carried out in unit 1, where the teacher has provided practice briefs for performance work in various contexts. It is expected that lessons on skills development will be continued until the teacher decides to begin work on the Showcase |
How will you be assessed?
Unit 1 - 60% of the marks are awarded through portfolio and controlled assessment.
Unit 2 - 40% of the mark is awarded through an externally set brief which is marked internally.
This course is worth 1 GCSE.
